Learning geomancy

I came to geomancy through an oral transmission, from master to student, in a tradition that has never quite been broken and has never quite been written down. I received this art from a mouth, not from a book. Twenty years later I set down what could be set down, and two books came of it. What does not fit into a book, I pass on the way it was given to me.

This is therefore not a training course. There is no programme fixed in advance, no module, no contractual duration, no diploma at the end. There is an oral, individual teaching that adjusts to the person receiving it and stops when it must stop.

I choose my students

It must be said at the outset, and plainly. I do not take everyone, and the number of students I follow at any one time is very small.

This is neither a whim nor a way of talking up the goods. A teaching of this kind commits both people who enter into it. It concerns an art that touches people’s lives, and passing it to someone not ready to carry it amounts to handing them a tool they will use badly — first against themselves, then against those who come to consult them.

It is not a matter of being gifted. It is a matter of being ready, which is quite another thing and has almost nothing to do with intelligence.

So we talk about it first. An interview, with no commitment on either side, in which I listen to what brings you and you take the measure of what I offer. I do sometimes say no. I also sometimes say not now, which is a different answer and often the right one.

What is asked of you

• Work between sessions. The lesson is not there for learning theory, it is there for using it. Theory you work at alone, in the books, between two sessions. Whoever does not work between lessons does not advance, and I see it by the second one.
• Your own charts. We do not work on textbook cases. We work on the charts you cast for your own questions, drawn from your real life. It is more demanding and there is no other road.
• Patience with yourself. Casting a chart is learned in a few weeks. Interpretation takes years, because it presupposes having seen many charts and many lives. Nobody should sell you a shortcut.
• Restraint. You will read for people close to you long before you believe yourself capable of it; that is inevitable and I will not hold it against you. But one does not announce an illness, one does not predict a death, one does not intervene in the life of a third party. These limits are part of the teaching just as much as the figures are.

The three degrees

These are not levels to be validated, they are three ways of standing before a chart. One passes from one to the next not by an examination but because something has given way.

1. I

   Initiation

   To cast a chart and recognise it.

   You learn to throw the numbers, to reduce them, to set the sixteen figures in the twelve houses, to form the tribunal. This is the mechanical part and it is acquired quickly, in a few weeks for anyone who works between sessions. At the end of this degree you know how to draw up a correct chart. You do not yet know how to read it, and it matters that you take the measure of that difference.

2. II

   Refinement

   To make the relations speak.

   This is where geomancy really begins and where most self-taught practitioners stop without knowing it. Elemental relations, the key, the aspects, rulerships, passations, derived houses. You stop adding up meanings and begin to read tensions. This degree is long. It has no fixed duration and I will promise you none.

3. III

   Mastery

   To answer someone.

   A correct chart, well read, does not yet make a reading. There remains the framing of a question with the person who brings it, the recognition of a chart that must be given up, the saying of a difficult thing without damaging the person who hears it, and the stopping where your competence stops. This degree cannot be learned from a book, and it is the only reason I still teach.

Anyone may stop at the degree that suffices for them. Many need only the first, in order to cast their own charts and answer to no one for them. That is a perfectly valid reason to learn, and I respect it entirely.

How it works

One-hour private lessons, one to one, by telephone, by video call or in person, as suits you. A lesson always starts from a chart you have cast and a question you have carried.

The rhythm is yours to set. Once a week, once a month, or as your time allows. Nothing is imposed and nothing is lost when you space them out.

Between sessions you may write or call. I answer the questions that come to you and clear up a chart that resists you, until reading becomes a habit. This is part of the lesson and is not charged for.

At the end of the course, whatever degree you stop at, I offer you a personal two-hour reading and give you your chart. It serves one precise purpose: to help you define your own way in this art, which will not be mine.

The two books

They are the written foundation of this teaching, and the theoretical work is done in them. You do not need to have read them to begin, but you will have read them before the end of the first degree.
